farmer, knows he must control it, because the more productive the farm the more animals it has, which means more animal waste. For poultry farmers, cattle farmers, swine farmers with lagoons & manure pits, if they refuse to properly manage the ammonia gases, are just throwing away profits.Ammonia is naturally released from manure & urine as it decomposes. High ammonia levels are also found in buildings with litter, solid floors & manure pits because will ammonia is released into the air, it is spread (by the animals) all over the floor, & diseases are passed onto through the feces traveling on the skin & feathers of the livestock. Heated buildings increases the release of ammonia. Ammonia at high levels will act as a disinfectant killing the good (beneficial) bacteria needed to decompose solid waste in manure pits. Manure will build up, reducing the capacity of holding tanks, making standard manure pumping systems 
unable to empty the pit. Eventually this will back up through the floors in the swine houses & overflowing lagoons. To completely clean the pit requires workers to enter the pit area, scrape away manure & slosh around in animal waste. This type of labor has is a high risk potential for diseases. The over exposure to ammonia gases will result in excessive sick leave, permanent disability, poor productivity & high lost of profits.
